The Problem
Ultrasound penetration depth depends on the diagnostic need. For near field evaluation a high frequency linear array (HFL) is optimal but for deep scans a low frequency phased or sector array or even a low frequency curved linear array is best.
Cart based systems typically have all three types of arrays. This approach adds size, weight and cost. While acceptable in a hospital environment, the size and cost is problematic for non-hospital clinical settings. Even most hand-held systems require the user to carry or purchase at least two arrays – a high and low frequency.
The Requirements
For clinics, doctors’ offices, helicopters, and fixed wing medical planes a light weight, durable and portable ultrasound system is needed. It needs to be flexible so it can be positioned on a table, attached to an IV pole, carried, or hand held.
Portability and cost require an innovative approach to ensure both a low and high frequency array.
Uses in these environments is often performed by novice and infrequent ultrasound users, so a simple to understand Graphical User Interface is essential.
The Solution
The SonicEye Portable system utilizes a unique design that contains two arrays in a single finger mounted probe. The system links by USB cable to a Microsoft tablet. The supplied tablet uses an APP that guides the user through the eFAST exam or in Manual mode accommodates other applications such as IV or PICC line placement, MSK, nerve block, etc.
